Week 2 Integrative Learning: Scanning Your Resume

Marketing Content Writer for Digital Genetix

On the JobScan, I received a 24% which isn’t the greatest score. First off, I don’t have a cover letter, which is one the key factors in appealing to an employer. I’ll write a cover letter to Digital Genetix, specially to the hiring manager and state who, what, how and why my skills could greatly benefit their company.

I’m missing three important, highly valuable skills. I need to really highlight these keywords in my resume; content, marketing and or content marketing. In the job description, Digital Genetix really emphasizes on these words, so it’s important that I reinstate them on my resume. It had also recommended me to add this specific job title to my resume but since I haven’t had any professional work experience that could relate to this, I do have college experience. I could expand more on my education experience and showcase my projects with the job title name. This wouldn’t be falsifying myself but turning my experience college as just as credible as a professional work experience.

I need to add more measurable results. At least five achievements or impacts that I’ve had while either at college or at work. I need to be specific in the details of these achievements and succinct, so that it’s an easy read. This is important because this re-emphasizes how I can greatly benefit the company with the work that I’ve excelled at. There are also a lot of character traits that I mention that don’t fit for the job description. They’re plain and cliché, so they won’t really capture the employers’ eyes. I need to be able to use descriptors that’ll set me apart from my competitors and really catch their eyes.

Other information that I’d like to incorporate that JobScan didn’t exactly offer is stating my mission, my goals and a brief sentence or two about myself, such as I did on my LinkedIn profile. I feel that this will make me appear more grounded as to what I want to do with myself and my future and also a little more personal as an individual getting to know a little more details as to who I am. I’ll also include my social media accounts, LinkedIn profile account, my web portfolio and media kit. My social media accounts would allow the employer to see my work and also some of hobbies, home-projects and get a really good look at my personality. LinkedIn, Portfolio and Media Kit are the more professional aspect of myself by looking at all of my finest works, skills, and experience. This is where they’ll have a greater understanding as to how I can benefit them.
