A 2017, American, Comedy-Drama film written and directed by Greta Gerwig. Holy Jeebus! This is an amazing film, I can see how it almost won an Oscar, my goodness. Okay so always always, these reviews are just my perspectives about how I feel and think of the film. I’m no expert but damn do I love talking about movies and so here goes nothing.

Lady Bird is a nickname that Christine McPherson gives herself, I’m guessing for self-identification purposes. We all go through self-nicknames to replace the ones our parents give us I guess during our rebellion phase to show how independent and majestic we truly are. I don’t think I ever had one and this name is just a blog name because I think it’s meaningful and relevant to me as a person. If you’d like to learn more you can listen to my podcast and hear more about the GhostGirl name.

This film is really focused on the mother and daughter relationship and how it can be troubling and yet beautiful at the same time. The mother is really strict and tough with her daughter. She isn’t exactly comforting nor supportive when it comes to her daughter wanting to go to top colleges. This is probably because she just doesn’t want her daughter to leave her yet and tries to be really difficult about it. Luckily though, Lady Bird doesn’t let anyone or anything get in the way of her dreams. She is so focused and determined to actually go to these colleges and in the end SPOILER ALERT, she gets to go.

This film felt so relevant and similar to my own life that I reflected a lot about myself. I don’t have any fond memories of my mother, she was mostly absent until recently but I remember how much I wished to have a mother to paint nails with, bake and learn laundry tips and old recipes that were passed down from generation to generation. I know that it’s not easy being a mother and I especially felt for Marion McPherson, the mother, because in her back story she doesn’t come from such a happy upbringing. This is something I personally relate to and understand and it can be hard to be affectionate and compassionate towards your children even when you’re wanting the best for them.

Sometimes as a mother we get so caught up in how we feel and what we think is right that we forget that we should just trust our children’s instincts and let them figure some things out for themselves. This is at least what I got from the film and I hope that instead of being tough and strict that I can be compassionate, supportive and trusting of my own children’s decisions.

Everything about this film from the music playlist, the script, the actors, just everything was absolutely amazing. This is one of those films that I could honestly watch all over again and again because it’s just worth it.

Oh my God, also kudos to Beanie Feldstein, aka Jonah Hill’s younger sister, aka the best side character to this film. Julie (Beanie’s character) is so damn cute and the best damn friend that everyone needs in their life. She’s this innocent, young girl that doesn’t mind doing all the mischievous deeds that Lady Bird seeks out. I just have the hugest crush on Julie! Lady Bird reminds me a lot like Juno. Lady Bird is mischievous, brave, ambitious, determined, focus, such a flirt and awesome. In some ways Lady Bird reminds me of myself in trying to stay true to herself and independent but yet also happens to pretend to be like the “cool people” because who doesn’t want to be popular and cool at some point of their lives.

The movie is obviously about Lady Bird’s coming of age, exploration, self-discovery and independence through a catholic high school. Her relationships and the scenarios in which she finds herself. I don’t want to give too much away but if you haven’t seen it, I’d definitely recommend to go watch it.

Overall Rating: 10/10
