This anime starts off with these two super cute, middle-school age students, Nishikata and Takagi-San. The main focus is how Nishikata is trying to get back at Takagi-San in teasing him by teasing her back. The goal of this teasing is to somehow have Takagi-San show that she’s embarrassed and flustered. The anime starts off extremely slow, that it actually took myself some time to really get into it. For about the first five episodes, it appears that Nishikata is scheming and plotting in trying to successfully tease Takagi-San but clearly failing each time. It’s cute but things became really interesting when the two were slowly revealing how they feel about each other. This is when I became more engaged with the anime because the way the anime slowly reveals Nishikata and Takagi-San’s emotions in an innocently, pure, puppy love sort of way it was just too much for my heart to handle. You’re only hearing and seeing from Nishikata’s point of view and it’s not until the end that we get a peek beneath Takagi-San’s cool exterior. Though, we don’t really need a clarification in either of their confessions of love for one another, it is undeniably entertaining to watch Nishikata struggle with himself and his emotions.
I think it’s mind-blowing how quickly and comfortably Takagi-San is in small amounts of revealing how she does like him and wants to spend more time with him. It kind of proves what most of western and eastern society believe that “girls do mature faster than boys.” Takagi-San knows that she has a crush on Nishikata and her way of showing her likeness for him is by teasing him to, throughout and from school. Nishikata on the other hand is completely oblivious and innocent as to the reasonings why Takagi-San can’t and won’t stop teasing him. He sees this as a challenge to himself and to duel his opponent in the craft of teasing. It’s not until I think the ninth episode that you really see Nishikata coming to the realization that he has a crush on Takagi-San. For me personally, it makes me wonder if this is how all boys straight or not, think and behave when they unknowingly like someone?
Are they that truly oblivious to when someone likes them and such? It’s such a treasure to see Nishikata go through a ride of emotions and realizations about himself but stay completely oblivious to Takagi-San. Even in the end he doesn’t quite know whether or not Takagi-San feels the same about him but obviously not, since she tries just as hard to keep it under wraps. The writing, the animation, the voice acting, everything about this anime was absolutely heartwarming and amazing. Watching these two is so fucking cute and it just gets cuter along the way. If you like daily life animes or daily life anything and cute, innocent, puppy love this is an anime for you. If you’re also new to anime this is a great way to ease yourself into watching more of this type of content. There’s not a lot else to really say because no words can really convey how warm and light my heart felt while watching this, you just have to watch it yourself.
