*NOTE: This anime has some explicit content and so will this review. Please if you are not of consent age, don't read and skip over this one. If you are easily offended or disturbed I suggest to not read this review since it will go over some taboo content that this anime is about. Also if you don't want to read but rather instead listen, head on over to the Audio page and click on my soundcloud ghostgirl podcast to give a quick listen!
This is by far, the weirdest, taboo anime I have ever watched. For a lot of us Americans and possibly even Japanese people, this can be pretty disturbing and it’s hard to enjoy it for this reason alone. These two girls become step sisters and getting all sexy with each other a lot of the time. Well some of the time, most of the time they’re fighting like a regular ol’ married couple. For me personally what makes it gross is just the fact that they’re sisters, step sisters and unrelated is beside the point, it’s still weird to me. The entire time Yuzu (blonde high schooler) is trying to appropriate herself, keeping herself in check in being the “proper older sister” while at the same time, making out and romancing Mei (black haired, president student council, high schooler) who is technically the same age as her but I guess for the sake of technicality is considered as her younger sister. I wish this anime to change the only fact that they’re sisters and just make them lesbian rivals instead.
Anyways, Yuzu’s mom marries Mei’s dad and she finds out after she comes home from school. Shocker! Didn’t see that coming. Yuzu is this trouble-maker, fashionista, super loud, clingy, girl who is obsessed with Mei. Mei is the complete opposite, in being practical, cool, calm, distant and reserved. They go to this all girl, private school and there was this crazy part that I learned within like the first four episodes. Because this is an all girl school, most of the girls end up hooking up with each other even if they’re betrothed to an older man. Which is the custom in this Japanese anime, most of these girls are forced into arranged marriages because status and reputation are important to their families and to themselves. So before I guess, they waste away to some old dude, they get to explore themselves in high school. I think, that homosexuality is still frowned upon in Japanese culture but just doing it on occasion or having that one high school moment of hooking it up with the same sex is okay? I’m not completely sure so don’t quote me on that but it’s just a thought.
So, how did Yuzu and Mei even begin to like each other since they’re so world apart trope? Well, SPOILER ALERT, Yuzu was making fun of Mei for making out with her teacher (which by the way was the man her grandfather betrothed to her, so technically it wasn’t wrong) and it was just light teasing but Mei showed her what “love” or being “in a relationship” was all about. Mei forced herself onto Yuzu and started making out with her against her will. Mei then replied “love is like that,” meaning that the poor girl was often being forced to do things against her will. Don’t worry, that problem fixes itself and if you want to know more about it, watch it. Now here’s the kicker, Mei TOOK Yuzu’s first kiss! What????? And thus gives us the perfectly explanation as to why Yuzu has grown so massively obsessed, I mean in love with Mei.
Large sigh. This is the most dumbest reason I have ever heard of. Would Yuzu just magically be in love with anyone who would’ve taken her first kiss? It’s just dumb. The only reason I stayed watching the entire show is because I wanted to see how the creators were going to be able to create 12 whole episodes of these two. These two are fighting to stay away from each other and at the same time trying to be with each other but the fact that they’re sisters and girls is just can’t be (drama voice). In the end they -
Well there you go, I purposely didn’t tell you the end game because haha you can clearly assume what happens in the end and if not, then go watch it. Overall, voice acting, animations, music, visuals are actually pretty great but the writing sucks. It just felt like the problems these two had weren’t realistic or clever enough to keep me engaged or guessing. At some point actually really early on, it was just a test at how accurate I could guess what was going to happen next.
So, whether you’re a veteran or a novice or a newbie, I would not recommend to watch this. There really isn’t a point to unless you’re into two step sisters showing some slight skin here and there. You’re mostly in for a shit ton of crying, shouting and fighting and no not like the cool anime action fights where they’re like super strong or something just like regular human fighting with slaps and pushing the other person away. I hope there isn’t a second season of this but you can be sure that I’m not going to watch it unless…. you guys vote me to. Then eh, maybe but like why?
Anyways there you go, Citrus in a nutshell from me.
